White Birch Bark Active to Inhibit Irritation

Greentech has created a soothing active for sensitive and reactive skins. Protectol (INCI: Dipropylene glycol (and) Betula alba bark extract (and) Scrophularia nodosa extract) was developed using the company's new research process, Bioinformatics. According to the company, the method combines the spacial representation of well-known classical drugs with the molecular modeling and the quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) technique.

By using the method, the company was able to determine that betulinic acid and betuline inhibited phospholipase A2 activity, which induced inflammatory actions. White birch bark and figwort aerial parts were chosen based on  their high concentration of betulinic acid, betuline and iridoids.

According to the company, the ingredient enables products to decrease cutaneous reactivity y nearly 65%. The ingredient is said to reduce the inflammation mediators enzyme production, decrease inflammation due to UV rays, soothe the epidermis and decrease stinging feelings. It is recommended for formulation into sensitive and reactive skin care, acneic skin care, irritated scalp care, sun and after-sun care and anti-mosquito soothing care.
